Covered is the new Couture

Muslim Influence to High Fashion

New York City as one of the world's hubs of high fashion, now far more embracing the Muslim Fashion to their industry.

A startup event, held by RARE by F.S. Charlie teaming up with a Muslim female, New York-based fashion designer, Nailah Lymus, will make history by launching UNDERWRAPS, the first global agency representing Muslim female fashion models, during this year New York Fashion Week.

It is also a proof that Muslim fashion is making its way into the international world of fashion.

Underwraps's roster will debut in a fashion showcase presented by Amirah Creations on February 11th, 2012.

Known for breaking barriers as a Muslim female fashion designer behind Amirah Creations, Nailah Lymus said:
"As a Muslim woman who has also worked in the fashion industry, I observe a heavy Muslim influence in all areas of fashion. Designers, photography, editorials all displaying inspirations from Muslim fashion.

I feel there is a need to shine the light on Muslim women who have been some of the originators of trend setting modest fashion for years. I'm bringing Muslims to mainstream-- covered is the new couture.

Muslim Fashion has had a strong influence in the fashion industry for years - with stylings gracing such coveted magazine covers as Vogue as well as providing inspiration for noteworthy collections including Victoria Beckham's Fall/Winter 2011 line. Islamic models have also brought diversity to the catwalk including the recent model stars Hanaa Ben Abdesslem (Tunisian) and Hindi Sahlial (Moroccan).

UNDERWRAPS is creating a fusion of inclusion - marrying the best of both the Muslim and non-Muslim worlds."

VOGUE's covers showcasing covered styles:

Not only Victoria Beckham's Fall line got inspired by Muslim fashion, some high fashion's designs, such as my favorite Chanel Pre Fall, from 2009 collection to 2012 collection, have been showing interests in covered-style fashion..

Indonesia, Colouring the Muslim Fashion World

News from The International Fair of The Moslem World, December 14th-19th, 2011, in Paris, France.

Dian Pelangi with her collection. In Paris, Dian showcased 10 set of her collection in the fashion show as the opening show, inspired by the Russian style for Winter fashion.

As a continuation from my previous post: End of Year 2011's Style and Fashion News, about Indonesian Muslim Fashion that was acknowledged as the best and the most favorite design in the International Fair of The Moslem World 2011 in Le Bourget, Paris, France, an interesting news also came from Kompas Female newsletter.

It is written that not only Muslimah Fashion's designs from Indonesian designers have "a big applause" at The International Fair in Paris, but also the way Indonesian Muslim women wrap their headscarf attracted a big attention of people in Paris, France.

Read the full story in Bahasa Indonesia here:
http://female.kompas.com/read/2011/12/31/11401923

And below is the picture of Dian Pelangi in Indonesian booth at the event, giving a tutorial on how she wrap her headscarf in turban style:
Dian pelangi gave a private tutorial to the booth's visitors who were interested in how she wrap her headscarf.

According to Dian's prediction, as she said to Kompas Female newsletter here, after the 'drape-y look' hijab wrapping, which is so 'in trend' amongst urban young Muslimah in Indonesia last year, the 'turban style' hijab wrapping would be a trend in 2012.

One thing from the news that also grab my attention is about Dian Pelangi's Coat.

It is the almost "sold out" piece from Dian Pelangi Collection in that event. It showed that many people in Paris love Dian's coat design, especially perhaps because they were in Winter during that event and they love colorful outfits, so the stylish, shocking-color, ethnic coat would be an attraction for them.

I'm so in love with the coat, too.. :)

Here is one sample of Dian Pelangi's cropped coat design:
Taken from her style blog, The Merchant Daughter.

IMG_1444

The coat was made from modified Palembang woven materials which made in Indonesia.
I love the coat's well-tailored cut, motif and color.

So, what's your opinion on this news?

Please welcome.. Hijabers Community Yogyakarta!

Sunday Fun with Hijabers Community Yogyakarta (HCY), July 10th, 2011.

This is the first time I met and attended an event held by Hijabers Community Yogyakarta (HCY). HCY is a community which in it, all Muslim women (especially who live in Yogyakarta-Indonesia and its surroundings area) can meet up, sharing, and do positive activities as a way to build a strong and good relationship between Muslimah ('silaturahmi') and as a place to improve ourself to be a better Muslimah.

Every month HCY held twice Sunday Fun's event as a routine meeting. It's on the first and the third Sunday of the month.

Last week HCY's Sunday Fun held a seminar about women's reproduction health (topic: cervical cancer), and a muslimah fashion bazaar. Sounds really fun, right?

Getting ready for the bazaar.

The Seminar. Speaker: Ibu Sri Panuntun, a lecture and also a nurse-midwife.

Yes, I have a great fun attending this routine meeting with Yogyakarta's hijabers (hijaber/hijabi = a call for a Muslim woman who wear hijab).
I got new knowledges, new friends, a new hijab-style (one pretty sister kindly share to me on how she wrapped her hijab), and also.. a new beautiful purple-pink shawl I bought from the bazaar :)
Thank you for this fun meet-up, Girls!

And here are some of style shots of the girls who attended this event:

Note: the 'yellow-mustard' above is a maxi dress with a hood. Same like the hoodie t-shirt, the hood is functioned as a shawl/hijab, too. Yellow-mustard.. matched with the colour black, looks awesome.

Cute look

Hijabi Fashion Week

Fashion Week...

What crossed your mind when you hear the word "Fashion Week"??

"High fashion.. Famous designers.. Runways.. Super models..."

But those things do not apply to HFW (Hijabi Fashion Week).

It's not always about high fashion and pictures full of super models on the runways..

Here, in HFW, we basically share our hijab styles, our creativity and skills in term of Fashion: on how to mix-and-match clothes, make a 'not suitable for hijab' clothes become a hijab-ready outfit, showing our own signature hijab style and new ways in wrapping headscarf, etc.; and hoping from that event we can inspire and learn from each other.

HFW will be showcasing real life Muslim women, whether they are a fashionista or not, wearing designers' clothes or not, a professional model or not, take their picture on the runways or just in the comfort of their own bedrooms, by professional photographer or by their own... ^_^

On this May 2011 Hijabi Fashion Week, any and every-Muslim women are invited and can participate..

For now, just sit back, relax and enjoy watching our special guest for the upcoming HFW, a fashionista and designer, Dina Tokio-O. She will be showing off her outfits style, from work wear to weekend wear and many more in between this May.

Is that video make you excited?! So get up, Ladies! Check your wardrobe, come up with any great ideas you got in mind for your outfits, take your camera, and show to the world your unique style!

Join with all Muslim women around the world and get inspired from each other!

Learn on how to participate here: LoveHFW.com and click 'attending' on Love HFW Facebook's event.

There will be lots of giveaways too during that event! See the list of HFW fabulous sponsors on LoveHFW's site and banner.

InshaAllah I will be participating, too... :)

Keep an eye out, Ladies!

Like a Fairytale: Catherine Middleton's Wedding Dress

British Royal Wedding, April 29th, 2011
Prince William and Ms. Catherine Middleton

Vogue Daily — Catherine Middleton

Vogue Daily — Catherine Middleton

Vogue Daily — Catherine Middleton and her sister, Pippa Middleton

Stunning dress! Simply elegantly beautiful, regal. Love the dress so much... If only I had a chance to wear such beautiful dress like that.. ;) Of course, with a necessary modification to suit the Islamic modesty..

The dress was made by a personal collaboration between the bride and her designer, Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen.

From the official press release:
“The lace applique for the bodice and skirt was handmade by the Royal School of Needlework, with individual flowers hand-cut from lace (in shapes of roses, thistle, daffodils and shamrocks). The dress is made of ivory and white satin gazar with a skirt in the shape of an opening flower. The satin bodice, narrowed at the waist and padded at the hips in a McQueen signature, is based on Victorian corsetry. The back is finished with 58 gazar and organza covered buttons.

The veil, made of ivory silk tulle with a trim of hand-embroidered flowers, is held in place by a 1936 Cartier tiara, lent to Ms. Middleton by the Queen. (It was bought for her mother by the Duke of York and presented to Queen Elizabeth on her 18th birthday.) Ms. Middleton’s earrings—shaped like oak leaves with a pave set diamond acorn suspended in the center—are by Robinson Pelham. The shoes are also by McQueen.”

On  her head, Catherine wore a Cartier Halo Tiara lent by the Queen. It carried the nuance of simplicity, regalia, and family meaning.

The bouquet was designed by Shane Connolly, and each flower in the bouquet carried a meaning. The flowers' meanings are:
Lily-of-the-valley: Return of happiness
Sweet William: Gallantry
Hyacinth: Constancy of love
Ivy: Fidelity; marriage; wedded love; friendship; affection
Myrtle: the emblem of marriage; love.

Prince William and Princess Catherine

Hope they will live happily ever after..

A bit flashback to the time before the wedding, back in December 2010, some Designers sketched their suggestions for Chaterine Middleton's wedding dress:

Peter Copping, Nina Ricci
Rachel Roy

Prabal Gurung

Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, Valentino

Vera Wang

Christian Lacroix

Now, we finally find out which designer Princess Chaterine has chosen to collaborate with for her wedding dress... :)
