Outfit Styling: Candy Coloured Tights for Maxis

Outfit Styling

Susie Bubble in Fendi heels and a flowing white skirt. We love how the magazine looks like a super-cool clutch.

After browsing on visual inspiration on Pinterest, my eyes spotted on an image of a white flowing skirt wore with a pair of black tights and fabulous Fendi heels. This stunning look reminded me of some cool fashion looks, and made me think why don't we pair tights with maxis (whether it's a long skirt, maxi dress, or abaya)..

Is it an innovative idea to wear tights with maxis?

Not really.. In four-seasons countries, it's a common to wear tights with maxis in Winter as a way to beat the freezing climate. In the hijabers' world, it's also a common to wear tights with maxis for modesty reason.. but mostly the tights are in skin-tone colors or in black.

I love tights, eventhough I only have one pair.. in black ;) They are truly a basic staple we must have. I usually pair them with skirts or maxi dresses. But, I never really think of wearing candy coloured tights with maxis (skirts, dresses or abayas).

Until now.. in regards to pushing the edge, it's a fantastic idea to play with solid coloured (or striped, or printed, or glittery, etc.) tights, particularly with maxis.

I've never heard that people matched these two for truly a 'fashion forward look' reason, as long as I know.

I have seen so many people sporting tights (in magazines, TV, on the street, in formal working-environments, by fashion bloggers, etc.). They fashionably wore these solid coloured, striped, printed, glittery tights with minis; mini skirts, mini dress, knee-length or mid-calf skirts/dresses, or shorts.. but never with maxis (except for those reasons I wrote above, or any?).

Some general fashion blogs/sites even had wrote THIS as a fashion no-no because of "what's the point to wear tights under long pieces if the tights weren't showed up?".

Yeap, they are right!

But, what they've missed about is that sometimes it's still has a "disclosed-gap" between the bottom-edge of the long skirt/dress and the shoes.. That spot might becomes ours to play with by adding a pop of color on it.. A flash of color!

You could wear a monochrome sleek elegant maxi dress.. and then voila! At the bottom of your outfit, there's a flash of color pops up while you are moving (such as walking, stepping the stairs, or sitting..) Cool! :)

Below are some questions that might be pop up in your head ;)

Why tights, instead of socks?

Tights have wider coverage to cover your legs (and feet) while you are wearing skirt/maxi dress/abaya. By wearing tights, we will have more confidence thought that we are in a full-covered. No worries when the wind blows your skirt, or your skirt get hitched to something, or while you are riding a bicycle.. :)

Why tights, instead of pants or skinny jeans?

Pants or skinny jeans under your skirt/maxi dress/abaya give a weird, un-neat, bulge-look to your appearance. And sometimes, while you are walking with the pants/jeans under your skirt, it even makes the skirt pulled up and ended up messy folded around your thighs, because of the "kinetic friction" of the two materials: the pants and the skirt (my own experience.. sounds familiar to you? ^_^)

Why tights, instead of leggings?

Leggings or jeggings (a term for jeans-leggings mix) do not cover up the back (top of) your feet, so they do not give a flash of color as we expect when we don this style! ;)

Where could we get a variety of coloured tights?

At many online or highstreet fashion stores, of course.

But first site that crossed my mind when I think about tights is welovecolors.com since they have a wide range of variety and colour of tights, leggings, hosiery, and any kind of those things.

Also Amirah Fashions, as a well-known Islamic clothing, also has got this 'look-styling' lately by selling bright coloured tights for abaya wearers.. aaaand in a cheaper price! ;)

Only £2.00 for a Pair of Quality 80 Denier Tights

As they said in the website, these candy coloured tights would be fantastic worn with a black abaya and a great pair of shiny black shoes. "We think it looks stylish and unique".

So next time, why don't you try styling up your candy coloured tights with a contrasting earth-toned maxi dress; or vice versa, a bright coloured maxi dress with contrasting natural-hued tights..

Have you done this before?

What do you think of it? Sounds fantastic.. or weird? ;)

Fashion Newsflash: Global Muslim model agency opens in New York and Issa collection at London Fashion Week 2012

Some news I picked from the fashion world in the past week are filled with a "touch" of Muslim fashion. From the world's hub of high fashion, New York, to the running Fashion Week in London, and Indonesia (the next fashion hub... *I hope.. ^_^* especially for Muslim fashion).

From New York, The National and The Guardian reported that the world's first Muslim model agency has been opened in New York city on February 11th, 2012. Although, as long as I know, this is not the first.. Indonesia already had this kind of agency that represents Muslim women with hijab only as models. Hmm... but I forgot the agency's name ;)

Live report from London Fashion Week also showed some covered styles that were running down the runway. On day 2, Issa London with her 'full prints' Autumn/Winter 2012 collection showcased beautiful prints on some model's outfits and headscarves.

And from Indonesia I heard the news that there will be an event on September called "World Muslimah Beauty 2012" competition. I do not know is this some kind of "hijabified" Miss Universe or is it different.. Let me find out more about this :)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As for the first news, do you remember my previous post, Covered is the new couture, about the upcoming launch of Underwraps, the first Muslim model agency in New York? Now, it has been opened.

Here are the interesting news written by The National and The Guardian-UK:

World's first Muslim model agency opens in New York.

The launch of the world's first Muslim model agency, in New York's fashionable Tribeca district, offered an interesting alternative to the options presented at New York Fashion Week a few blocks uptown. A coming-together of a particularly stylish segment of the Islamic community in this cosmopolitan city, the event on Saturday night played host to everyone from a fully veiled woman in black abaya to dramatically coiffed fashionistas (and fashionistos) curious about a groundbreaking project.

The founder of the Underwraps agency, Nailah Lymus, is a born-and-bred New York Muslim with a love of fashion and a mission to prove Islam's worth and tolerance to a city whose inhabitants remain, in many cases, emotionally fragile and somewhat suspicious of Islam more than a decade after the tragic September 11 terrorist attacks.

And The Guardian wrote:

Muslim model agency supports modesty on the catwalks.
If the guests atttending the Stella McCartney party are anything to go by, then flesh will feature prominently in London fashion week. If so it will be a far cry from one fashion show in New York last week, which coincided with the launch of a new agency for Muslim models. Could the trend for modest couture catch on here?

The Underwraps agency's founder, New York fashion designer Nailah Lymus, says 'being modest isn't just a Muslim concept'; it crosses many religions and cultures.
Read the rest of the article here.

Issa London's full prints collection for Autumn/Winter 2012-2013:

Issa London, in her show in London Fashion Week's day 2 (February 18th, 2012), wrapped some of her models with modest outfits.

I love the outfit combined with a big flower-printed headscarf worn by one of the models. Unfortunately the outfit, particularly the bottom part of the outfit, was not really modest (from Islamic rules' point of view).. It should have been a modest outfit if only the model didn't wear a pair of tight pants but instead a maxi skirt or wide pants in the same prints.

However, love the way this outfit was mixed-and-matched..

For hijabi, of course it's better to change the tight pants with a pair of wide pants or maxi skirt.. :)

Another stunning prints at Issa London, Autumn/Winter 2012 collection, London Fashion Week:

What do you think of these? Are these a good opportunity to raise an awareness on covered style; Or, do you have another opinions?

In regard to Muslim model agency, it's recommended that starts from Muslim fashion designers who are willing to hire models from these Muslim model agencies, and also the models, who must always improving their skills on fashion modelling.

Fresh Looks of the classic black-and-white stripes

Fashion trends

Continue from my latest post about the black-and-white stripes (matched with a bright, floral Spring style) as a Spring Fashion Trend from the 10 Crosby Derek Lam Spring 2012, I would like to share my finds recently on this trend. I stumbled upon two girls who pull off this trend fabulously.

The first look that caught my eyes is from Tokyo Fashion (August, 2011) which featured this young girl, named Sagano, on the street in Harajuku. She was stand out for the contrast of her outfit; a bright red lipstick matched by the red apple-shaped handbag and the red platforms of her heels, paired with a patchwork skirt, and contrasted with a black-and-white striped button-up top.

The second look is from Indonesia fashion icon in the world of Muslimah Fashion, Dian Pelangi. Not only sporting and styling her own hijab style fabulously on her blog, The Merchant Daughter, she is also a young fashion designer specializing in tie-dye technique. The look I found below was on the latest post in her blog. She styled up a black-and-white striped maxi dress with a bright yellow-mustard cardigan and a printed headscarf in the same hue with the cardigan.

(Photo credit: Tokyo Fashion and The Merchant Daughter)

Will you try out this style?

You can try with other floral prints and other bright colours, such as tosca green, coral, fuchsia, pink, orange, or even neon/cobalt blue.

Styling tips: To pull off this style successfully, remember to keep your accessories (bag, shoes, jewelries) in the same hue and stay within the same color family as the floral-printed one; Or, keep the accessories in fairly neutrals or nude colors (such as: grey, khaki, beige/cream, light brown, navy blue, white, or black) to keep everything together and look coordinated without too matchy. At last, the most important thing you need is be confident.. to make this style work for you.. :)

Black-and-White Stripes as a match (or a fab clash?) to the Bright and the Flowery

Spring style:
From the 10 Crosby Derek Lam Spring 2012 Ready-to-Wear

In my previous "Styling tips for today" post, I have wrote about stripes: matching the long-sleeve, stripes tee with a cropped jacket.

Now, as for Spring 2012, Derek Lam has launched his 10 Crosby line with lots of stripes, especially the black-and-white stripes as a complement to the Spring style (bright, flowery). Not only it would flatter the outfits, but also it gave an unexpected pattern pop..

Here are the lookbook from 10 Crosby Derek Lam Spring 2012 RTW:

Black-and-white stripes with flowery prints:

Besides 'the stripes', I also love this 'graphic, color block' look:
The bright graphic, color-blocked, diamond-printed pants matched with the black waxed-cotton top (that looks like leather).

And, this bright yellow maxi dress:
How if we give this bright look a well-tailored black-and-white-stripes jacket/blazer?
What do you think? ;)

So, do you like this style?

This time of year, trousers are getting a great interference in the mode setting. They come in new modes and cuts; And the women today have enjoyed wearing trousers just the same as jeans.

Yes, some hijabi-friends of mine ever said that. Even, they have planned to switch their wardrobe items from 'jeans-legging wardrobe' to 'wide-trousers-maxis'.

So, how about you? Which style you're gonna rockin' this season? :)
