Friniggi: a new promising modest sportwear

Sport Hijab

I've been following this modest-sportswear Brand since a long time ago, when "the team" behind this brand was still developing their designs and products (I filled in the survey they made when they were still in a pre-designing stage of their products), up until now when they are ready to launch their products.

In my opinion, Friniggi sports wears are great and promising. According to their information, the products' details, and the pictures of the products they sent to me through emails, this Islamic workout-clothes they have are performance oriented.
The garments are:
  • breathable
  • moisture-wicking
  • light-weight
  • Islamically modest
  • fuss free, no layering required
  • allows for freedom of movement
MODEST PERFORMANCE SPORTSWEAR

Stay comfortable, cool & dry in friniggi
moisture management tops.

Choking in your amira hijab?
The friniggi sports hijab comes in 6 different sizes designed for comfort. And modesty.

As for the tops,
Friniggi Sports Tops are made from moisture management fabric that wicks sweat away from the body. Lightweight and breathable, it dries quickly too.
Featured item: Pioneer 203
Featured item: Pioneer 403
(Images: Courtesy of Friniggi Sportswear)

Compare with wearing a cotton tee for sports, even though it is comfortable and cool, but it is not suitable for high-intensity physically-active exercise, such as soccer or running.

Cotton absorbs heat and moisture; this is not good when what you need is to stay cool and dry. It also absorbs all the sweat we produce while exercising, and this will make our clothing heavier. This is what we do not want to while doing 'full-of-sweat' high intensity exercise.

And for the head-covering, according to their site, the Friniggi Sports Hijabs are lightweight, moisture-wicking and come in six different sizes to ensure the 'fit'ness and 'comfort'ness. Also, they are designed as one piece in compact shape (so, no pins required), no alien-head/scuba diver look, and specialized cut to cover chest (it's a good news for you who want your hijab covers your chest on top of the clothing you're wearing).

The thoughts behind this brand:
Friniggi Sportswear is all about sport and modest Muslim women, especially is dedicated for the Western Muslim woman whether she was born and raised in the west or is ethnically western, where usually the environment is not "hijabi-friendly". The West usually doesn't have women-only facilities like Muslim-oriented countries do.

Friniggi Sportswear is focused on improving "these women" 's athletic performance in a stylish, modest way.

The Friniggi Sportswear's online store is due to open on March 1st, 2012. But right now, they are already taking pre-orders from December 5th, 2011, to January 15th, 2012.

If you interested, go to friniggi.com to place your pre-order, or simply take a look at their lovely collection in several designs and colors.. :)

So, what do you think of this sportswear?

Review's Update: Feedback from Capsters team

Sports
(Photo: courtesy of Capsters)

Regarding to my review on Capsters 'Runner-type' Sports Hijab, the designer of Capsters, Cindy van den Bremen, has kindly gave her feedback on my suggestion about Capsters Runner. You can read my Capsters Review here

Here is the feedback from Cindy and her information on the issue I got with my Capsters Runner:
Dear Rania,

Thank you for sending the link to your blog and placing your review. Also much thanks for the improvements you suggested.
We're probably going to lower the Runner collar with the next production, as we did with our Capsters Team.
We are probably going to add another color variation as well ;-)

As far as the extra space for a hair knot in the hijab: that's actually how I originally designed the sports hijabs. but the feedback I got was that the hijabs were too loose. So I tightened the designs for a snugger fit. Leaving little room for extra hair ;-)
Nevertheless, our Capsters Aerobics does have a special feature: a hairbag in the back that you can put your ponytail in so that the hijab and your hair stays in place while jumping and running.

I will place a link to your blog on our Capsters Facebook fanpage!
Kind regards,
Cindy van den Bremen
Designer of Capsters

In Capsters' Facebook page, the Capsters team also gave their solution about this issue:
We suggest the Capsters Aerobics for those of you with lots of hair: it has a separate hairbag in the back! Also our Capsters Basic has a bit looser fit around the head, leaving room for a big knot of hair ;-)
So, if you have a long and thick hair, you better go for Capsters sports Aerobic or casual Basic

Also, in their next production, Capsters will lower the Runner's collar and add more colour variation as well. Isn't it fantastic?

As you already read in my review, the Runner's materials are excellent.. and, with the forthcoming new design of Runner, I'm sure it would be worth it to have one.. (or two, perhaps.. ^_^).

Capsters - Sports Hijab

Review

About one month ago I received a package from Capsters Sports Hijab. It's a giveaway for me from Capsters.

Capsters is one of the sponsors of Hijabi Fashion Week (HFW) May 2011. You must be already knew about that event from my previous posts. Capsters gave away HFW's participants a sports hijab of their choice to be wore in that event for category: Day 3 - Work Out Wear, and asked what the participants' thoughts about Capsters Hijab?

I've been so lucky to receive it! Thank you, Capsters! :)

I chose Capsters Sports Hijab type 'Runner', colour black.

It came in a nice big envelope with Capsters' logo and address printed on it. When I opened the package, my 'Runner Capsters' was carefully presented in a good thick zipped plastic bag, again with Capsters' logo on it, along with capsters brosur consisted of pictures of variety type of Capsters Hijab.

First Impression:
I directly fall in love with the materials. It feels soft, cool, breathable, and smelt nice.. :) The design look perfect for sports. It's a kind of instant or slip-on hijab. The way to wear it is: you simply pull it over your head, then slide it down.. Ready! No pin, no knot, no tie.

I'm so thrilled with pleasure receiving this capsters and can't wait to try it for working out!

The look and how it felt when it is wore:
'Runner' Sports Hijab felt very comfortable to wear. It's very light-weight and soft. It covers my head comfortably letting me feel the air flow around my head, keeping my head cool, and letting me transpire easily just like they said on the website.

I have tried to wear it while I'm bicycling in the middle of the day (when the sunshine is very hot and in Indonesian 'humid and hot' tropical climate like this!), for about one hour. Terrific! Its breathable materials gave me a comfort like no other headscarves I have did while I'm working out. It felt like I'm not wearing anything on my head.

Here's me sporting Capsters 'Runner' on Hijabi Fashion Week May 2011 - Day 3: Work Out Wear:

It fits perfectly on my head and neck.. very simple and practical.. no flowing, hanging, or bulged materials.

Wearability:
Capsters 'Runner' looks similar with 'ninja' headdress which is so popular lately in Indonesia as an inner scarf.

So, if you have this type of Capsters, especially in colour black, you will get not only an excellent hijab for sports, but also a comfortable inner scarf! :)

Or, you can simply wear it just it is.

Areas that I thought need an improvement:
1). The length of Capsters 'Runner', for me, needs to be lengthened to reach upper bosom.

I have a long and thick hair, so before I put my hijab on, I tie it in a pony tail, then roll it upper the back of my neck. I roll my hair up because I don't want it peeking out from the bottom of my hijab, and I don't quite like the feeling of my hair touching my back-neck while I'm working out.

But when I put on my 'Runner' hijab, it lifted up a bit because of my "hair do", and causing my upper bosom peeking out a bit... So, for me in particular, it is not suitable to be worn with low-necklined tops.

2). Need to build some kind of space or volume inside the 'Runner' hijab to place a long/thick hair... perhaps a new design or creating a particular shape of sports hijab for those who have long and thick hair.

When I wore my 'Runner', my hair inside gave an illusion of square-shaped head... ^_^. So, as you see in the above pictures, I wore it with a wide headband or a mini scarf over it.

Or perhaps, I should tie and place my hair right on the back of my neck, not too high, while I'm wearing it, to be look like the model in Capsters' website.. :)
Runner

3). More colour choices.

Overall:
The 'Runner' Sports Hijab is terrific! Very useful and helpful. It gives you full coverage without losing your comfort.

I'm so happy to have it, because I love to work out, jogging, bicycling and playing badminton with my kids, or just having fun playing with them in the sports-field.

And particularly in Indonesian tropical climate (humid and hot), the 'Runner' sports hijab as an inner scarf is perfect and gives an advantage which is you can be more creative with your hijab wrapping.. whether you want to wrap your hijab in a loose style or turban style, you don't have to worry that your hair and neck will be showed up.

Go to Capsters' website: www.capsters.com to see more details of 'Runner' Sports Hijab and also other Capsters' fabulous type of Sports Hijab.

Some types that I love too from the site are Capsters Aerobics, Outdoor (perfect for Winter)Swim, and Easy which I think would be useful and... (this is important too) have STYLISH modern designs.. :)

Hijabi Fashion Week: Day 3 - Work Out Wear

June 1, 2011

Day 3 - Work Out Wear

Outfit:
  • Work out pants
  • A sweat jacket
  • A blue-pink polkadots mini-scarf
  • Sports shoes
  • Capsters 'Runner' sports hijab:

Time to work out.. It's my favorite! :)

Tips for today: Try to look stylish while doing sports! :)
And it would be better if you wear a hijab which specialized for sports, because the shape and materials were designed to fit sport activities. It will cover your head comfortably letting you transpire easily and keeping your head cool. So, you can stay active longer.. :)

InshaAllah soon I will post my review on Capsters 'Runner' sports hijab I wore in this picture.

Right now, let's run.. join the fun... playing sports!!
Happy work out, Lovelies! :)

New Hijab for Sports

At last... find it!
ResportOn

On the hunt for a suitably hijab that is practical and comfortable to be wore on working out or playing sports?

I have written about many kind of sports hijab before on my previous post here. But the one that make me impressed is Resport. Unfortunately, at that time I can't found either the site, where I can't found more information about this sport hijab, nor the contact channel to the designer/company of Resport.

I knew Resport for the first time from The Huffington Post and The Toronto Star. It's a headscarf and camisole in one with an opening at the back of the head, allowing easy access to readjust the hair. Resport is wore under the usual sports wear.

I think it's a solution for Muslim women athletes and 'very active' Muslimahs who want to feel comfortable in playing sports and doing their 'highly active' activities. This brilliant 'fashion invention' will allow more Muslim women to compete in sports.

As I wrote on my previous post, for me, Resport has the biggest probability to be picked up as the perfect sports hijab. It's sleek, body-fitted, and has no parts flowing around, so it wouldn't disturb or block our activities. I myself, right now still go with fitted Al Amira-type hijab for working out or playing sport, but sometimes I feel less comfortable with that type of hijab while I'm working out.

Surprisingly, recently one of my lovely readers, told me the site where I can find and buy Resport (she also told me that now Resport has changed its name into ResportOn). The site is www.ResportOn.com

Hope this information will be helpful for you too who need it... :)

The designer, Elham Seyed Javad, herself also wrote a comment on my blog saying thanks for mentioning and loving the ResportOn; and also asked for my feedbacks on their very first version of ResportOn and suggestions for future ResportOn's variant (It's really an honour for me... ^_^).

Here's the picture of the first version of ResportOn:

ResportOn
(Image: ResportOn.com)

The description about ResportOn on its site:

Details : Each element is designed to live up to your PERFORMANCE. The hood’s unique design keeps all the hair away from the face. The hi-tech material, featuring micro-pores, dries extremely quickly, up to 14 times faster than cotton. Treated before fabrication, the fibers preserve their propertie...
Weight: 0.23 kg
Color: White
Size: Kids (4,5,6,7), Junior (S,M,L), and Ladies (XS,S,M,L)

I think the first version of ResportOn is already perfect.
  • The color, white, is neutral and less heat-absorbent.
  • The size also came in a wide range of sizes.
  • The material, according to the site, is in high quality.
  • And, its unique design with an opening at the back of the head, allowing easy access to readjust the hair and avoiding bother the face and neck with zipper, button, seam, or things like that.
My suggestion is only adding more colors like black or pink... :) and the variant, not only in sleeves-less but also in short sleeves and long sleeves, with a short torso or long torso. So we have more option to choose.

Note:

To avoid miss-understood about the sleeves-less type of ResportOn (as I read in the comment section of ResportOn's article in The Huffington Post; some people said, "head covered but the arms are bare"), let me explain a bit.

Resport is wore under the usual sports wear. For Muslim women who wear hijab, if your usual sportswear already has long sleeves, you can choose to wear ResportOn in sleeves-less type, and if your usual sportswear is sleeves-less, opt the long sleeves type of ResportOn.

Sports Hijab - Wearing ResportOn from ResportOn on Vimeo.

And one more addition, perhaps the designer can even invent a ResportOn for the whole body (except hands and face), with two variants:

1.) to be worn under the usual sportswear (it must be sleek, comfort, and skin-tight but breathable), and

2.) as a sportswear itself.

As the sportswear itself, it must suit for sports activities (intended particularly for sports like biking, athletics, or gymnastics) but somehow, without showing our body-curves as a woman. Perhaps by adding more layers in some spots to hide the curves, or by using textured materials.

Active by SHUKR

Another new 'sporty' hijab is an upcoming line from SHUKR called Active. Compared with ResportOn, SHUKR's Active are 'looser' and have not only headwear but also sporty tops and pants.

This is good for you who opt to not wear a skin-tight headwear.

Here's a sneak peak of Active attire, taken from SHUKR Head Designer's sketchbook for Spring-Summer 2011 collection:

You can see SHUKR's upcoming collection here, still in sketches... ;)
Or, SHUKR's online store here.

What's your opinion about these sports hijabs? What kind of hijab did you wear while you're working out or playing sport?

Do you have any thoughts or suggestion on how the perfect sport hijab is? Please share with us... :)

'Buff' Headgear

Multifunction headwear for hijabi

I came across pictures of 'buff' in one of sport magazines, and I think "Wow, this is cool! It's very useful for hijabi like us". It can cover your hair, neck, half of your face, and it can be used as headband/underscarf, or use it to tie your hair.

Buff is a multifunctional tubular headwear, that mostly wore by male or female bikers as a functional accessories to accompany their biking activities. But this headwear can also be wore for many sport activities.

Some of you perhaps already know about this headwear. I was amused by the fact that it resembles Amirah Hijab and by its multifunction. And I think it would make a good headband or sport hijab... ^_^.

According to kitshack.com,
Original Buff® keeps you warm in the cold, wick-moisture and keeps you cool when it’s hot. The lightweight, breathable, moisture wicking fabric is wind resistant and extremely comfortable to wear. Material: 100% Polyester Microfibre. Seam Free: No irritating seams or hems.

Buff also comes in great variety; there's a buff that formulated for UV protection, wind block, repels insects, and buff for Winter; in all sorts of colors, prints, and lengths.

Sneak a Peek: Friniggi Sportswear's First Designs

Fatima from Friniggi Sportswear, a new sportswear shop for Muslim women, emailed me about their first collection. The designs are in progress and she'd like to give us sneak-a-peek about Friniggi's first collection and would love to hear your feedback.

Here are the sketches. Remember that these designs fall under the copyright of FRINIGGI SPORTSWEAR.

Black and white sketch:

Colour Sketch:
(Pictures: Courtesy of FRINIGGI Sportswear)

According to Fatima,
"Friniggi focuses on developing a simple concept, fusing Islamic modesty, modern design and athletic performance.
The designs are made to be versatile garments that can be easily to be matched with any sportswear you may already have. The tops are long-sleeved and knee-length tops that can be worn over any track pants in your wardrobe, and no need to worry whether those pair of pants are too tight, because the tops cover everything.
Some items come with a matching hijab, but the design sketches above do not include the hijabs, and the colours schemes are just for illustrative purposes."
The designs look comfortable enough. I just want to add my opinion that I think it would be better if the tops' length is a bit above the knees, so it won't disturb/block our movement in sport activities and we can move more freely.

What do you think of Friniggi's sportswear designs? Love it? Hate it? Do you have any suggestions?

What kind of sportswear do you wish to have?

Hijab For Sport: Queendom Hijabs of Canada

What kind of hijab are you looking for sport?

Queendom Hijabs, hijab designer based in Ottawa, Ontario Canada, are offering you their collection of sport hijabs. The fabrics are made of Bamboo materials, organic cotton, and a bit percentage of spandex for the elasticity.

They claim that these hijab are very comfort  because of its moisture absorbent materials, and its inner hair reinforcement to keep hair off of neck, especially after working out and neck is sweaty (inside hijab). It's easy to wear too, just a slip on hijab, one-piece and pin-free.

The benefits using Bamboo materials for sporting clothes can be read here on their site.

Bahiya Collections, one of the online Hijab Store, are carrying their Athletica basic black hijab. If you'd like to see the hijab in action, watch here.

This is my favorite sport hijab on their website:

It is their 'patriotic version' with country-flag embedded on it.

I love the cut... fit and sophisticated, and the stiff-shape on the forehead. In my opinion, based on aesthetics point of view, the crossing straps at the back of the head looks a bit 'strange'... although it is meant to prevent the hijab from raising up while running; but I think, the hijabs without 'the cross' look more chic and practical.

(Images are provided by Queendom Hijabs for Fashioning Faith,

Queendom Hijabs provides not only hijabs for sports, but also for everyday wear, for casual style, and for Winter season. Check their website: Queendom-Hijabs.com to see the entire collection and the details about their products.

Hijab For Sports

I'm always excited when it comes to sport hijab... when I heard a clothes-producing company or a designer launches a new model or design of modest sport-clothes or sports hijab... or, when there is an invention/innovation about it.

Modest swimwear, I think, is one of the big inventions/innovations for muslim women that makes me really happy. I embrace all new modest sport-clothes designs which can make us more and more comfort to do all of our physical/sporting activities.

Recently, Bahiya Collections has launched a new sport hijab, named Athletica Sports Hijab, made of organic cotton and bamboo materials, so, they said, it is absorbent and breathable.

I wonder how it would feel?

I also found a website that offers a variety of sports headwear, the name is Capsters. Capsters offers sports headwear that are suitable either for warm climate or for cold climate.
For warm climate type, from what they said, the materials are light, very soft, smooth, and breathable to keep your head cool. Light colors are available for warmer climate.

They also offer sports headwear depends on the sport. There are a tennis, aerobics, surf, swim, running, or outdoor headwear.

Check their complete collection here.

I have a hijab that looks like this one, and this is a kind of hijab that I'm wearing when I do my workout.

Another kind of sport hijab that I'd like to mention is the one that invented last year. On November 2009, an industrial designer from Montreal, Canada, Elham Seyed Javad designed a sleek sport hijab called Resport. It's a headscarf and camisole in one with an opening at the back of the head, allowing easy acces to readjust the hair. Resport is wore under the usual sports wear.

Read the story behind her invention here.

Note: to be wore under long-sleeves sport wear
(Picture via Huffington Post

Resport will be available with short sleeves, long sleeves, and sleeveless. I think this one would be our future sports hijab. It looks practical and comfort, and I hope the materials are also breathable, so we wouldn't feel that we have this headwear on.

If I have to choose, judging from just their look and their description, I think I would choose Resport. It looks very comfortable to wear on sporting activities... What do you think?

What kind of sports hijab that you are used to or choose to wear?

The Olympians

Quebec designer says headscarf 'integrates rather than excludes certain communities'

MONTREAL–First, a Muslim girl was barred from a soccer match for wearing a hijab. Then, five Muslim girls were ejected from a tae kwon do tournament for the same reason.

It was 2007, at a time when Quebecers were preoccupied with how far they should go to "accommodate" the religious and cultural differences of immigrants in a secular and multicultural society.

While soccer and martial arts officials cited safety concerns, many called the ejections racist, and the incidents became part of the larger controversy.

Fast forward two years, and industrial designer Elham Seyed Javad has taken up the cause.

Read the rest here.

You could also read about the twelve ladies who are the hijab-wearing Muslimahs who will be competing at the Beijing Olympics here.
